Interview Quesitons
How did the world or characters first appear to you, as an image, a feeling, or a line of dialogue?
Tamara popped into my head one day when we were riding around Phuket getting lost. I let her take over from there.
Your book explores the theme of finding your voice. What drew you to that theme?
Knowing that this is a challenge for other women besides Tamara. Also, wanting readers to cheer her on.
Which scene or moment changed the story for you as you were writing it?
Actually, the final scene. Something happens that I hadn’t planned to include in the book, but the story took control.
What kind of research or lived experience shaped your characters?
Life! Life as a woman who has struggled and knows what it’s like to feel stuck. And the beautiful life Brad and I have created in Phuket. I wanted Tamara to have her own slice of it.
How did your setting influence the tone or mood of the book?
The second part of the book being set in exotic, colourful and tropical Phuket. You feel the heat on every page. As Tamara adapts to a new culture and landscape, she discovers more about who she wants to become.
If your protagonist could give one piece of advice to readers, what would it be?
Trust your instincts. Don’t ignore the whisper in your heart.
What surprised you most about the story once it was finished?
How so often in life, sadness and joy co-exist. My novels end with grief and hope holding hands.
How do you hope readers feel when they turn the last page?
Courageous.
What’s next, are these characters done with you, or do they still whisper?
I have three women in my head screaming at me to write their story, so for now, I’ll let Tamara have a break.
